On the third floor of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, I showed Angelo all of my favorite melancholy works of art.

“This is called Still Life of Dead Birds by Jan Vonck,” I said.

“One dead bird is sad,” said Angelo. “Three is a tragedy.”

“Here is Still Life with Pheasants and Plovers by the great impressionist Claude Monet,” I said.

“I get the impression those birds aren't sleeping,” said Angelo. “Sad, sad, sad.”
